Music Video Review:
Incubus - Dig (Part 2)

Yesterday I started a post critiquing the Dig music video contest. That post is required reading to this one.

Lets get started where we left off!

Video 3:

Director/Editor: Matt Ryan
DEPV: $150 (I’m guessing the actors aren’t paid.)

Wide screen is always classy. But besides that, this is a well executed video. Surprisingly, I really like the way the 2 tone keying came out, simple, yet visually appealing. The other roll of footage is also pretty good. Some shots are misses, but overall well lit and shot. The acting isn’t half bad either. Most importantly, it manages to get across some sort of story. The 3rd roll of footage, with the hand held in the park also works. Sure, flashbacks on hand helds have been done to death, but it’s not over used in this video. I don’t get the sudden dump of the 2 tone keying for washed out keying, at all (at the very end).

Video 4:

Animator: “Kaamuz”
DEPV: $500 (Flash animation course)

Fantastic. Animation always excels at taking something low budget, adding a lot of time and making it look like a million bucks. The art style is taken straight from the album and then put to motion. A solid video. I like the gritty art style, and the animation is very well done, nothing more to say.

This video was the runner-up, or co-winner and it did get air time.

Video 5:

Director/Editor: Ramon Boutviseth (Studio B Films)
DEPV: $5000

I’m not even sure if this is fair. An excellent video. The concept is simple, nothing special. But the production value is incredible. First off it uses actual actors, this helps in giving us a small glimpse of a story. Then, it is lit and shot professionally, on production quality equipment. Just look at the quality of the slow motion shots! On top of that, the post production is top notch. Notice how the shots of the couple happy are warm and the shots of the couple fighting seem to be washed out and cold. It’s all in the details…

Needless to say this last video was the winner.
