Music Video Review:
Gary Jules & Michael Andrews - Mad World
Song: Mad World
Artists: Gary Jules & Michael Andrews
Director: Michel Gondry
Year: 2003
This video is what I would call a production nightmare. The concept is simple, Gary Jules is singing on a roof, and looking down on children who are choreographing some pretty crazy things. The result is another great video with Michel Gondry at the helm. In true Gondry fashion, he makes the whole thing one take, I’m sure everybody hated him for it, but the result is a great video that captures the youthful innocence of the song. A lot of the credit also has to go to Gondry collaborator Lauri Faggioni for handling the intricate choreography of the kids.
This song, with it’s poignant if unfocused lyrics, has inspired a large amount of varied covers. They’re listed here. I always liked the Gears of War ad. And the original video is a crazy 80’s video with liberal use of slow dissolves (make sure to catch it at 1:55 in for halarious 80’s “vogueing”). Finally, there is this video, which is a pretty horrific cover, and the video looks like the product of some sort of post production seminar.
