Music Video Review:
The Pharcyde - Drop

Song: The Drop
Artist: Pharcyde
Director: Spike Jonze
Year: 1996

This video proves that sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones. Spike Jonze goes back to one of the earliest film effects, play the film in reverse. The results are awesome in this music video. I could be wrong, but I believe Spike was the one that came with the “speaking backwards” trick. I’ve seen it done since, but not in anything before this video.

If you’re watching the video and wondering how they did it. Yes they filmed everything backwards, yes Pharcyde is actually rapping backwards, no fancy effects here. I’ve seen the commentary for this video. They prepped and shot the whole thing in like a week. They had a linguist write out gibberish that
would look like the words when played in reverse. Then, Pharcyde memorized this gibberish and rapped it to the music playing in reverse as well. The whole production is pretty ming boggling. And I love how Spike doesn’t shy away from the long takes, the whole video is only a handful of shots. In the end, Pharcyde was a little disappointed and wished they had more time to practice their backwards rapping, but I still think it came out pretty good.
