This is my entry for the Red Bull Rough Cuts 2007 contest. I made it two years ago, and I’ve learned a lot since then, but looking back at it now, I still think it’s excellent. The rhythm and flow of the whole thing is very good. In fact if I were to go back today I think the only thing I would change is add some heavy color correction to the footage which is a bit washed out.

For those who don’t know, Red Bull Rough Cuts is an annual editing competition hosted by Red Bull. They pick their new extreme sports athlete of choice, and they take hours of video footage, most of it worthless. Then they take a handful of songs from unknown bands and they hope one of the thousands of participants can piece together something that resembles a quality video. They then give this person a really crappy prize and they save thousands of dollars. Fantastic…

This year’s athlete is Travis Pastrana, and the contest started last week. The entries are due at the end of this month, but if you aren’t in already you’re out of luck as it is limited entries. Thankfully this year the entries are limited to college students so hopefully some up and coming editors will get a chance to win and not get blown away by big budget post production houses who came in on the weekend and cranked out the greatest skating video ever.

I actually got my hands on this years footage, so I’ll put something together for fun, as an unofficial entry of sorts, since I’m not in school anymore.
